OpenAI is reportedly putting the final touches on a deal to bring in up to $30 billion in new private funding. According to sources who spoke with CNBC, the round would value the company at $1.25 trillion before the new money comes in. It’s a staggering number that would place the company ahead of every other private firm in the world in terms of market worth.

The plan is being led by Coatue along with investors from the United Arab Emirates. There are also reports that a deal with the UAE could involve securing additional computing capacity for OpenAI from that region. While OpenAI declined to comment on the matter, sources say the terms of the deal are still being negotiated and could change.

A valuation of this size would break records as the most highly valued private company ever. It would also set a very high bar for OpenAI’s upcoming public offering. The company filed confidential paperwork for an IPO back in June. That filing followed a raise in March that valued the ChatGPT maker at $852 billion after the round.

This new push for funding comes after reports from a month ago stating that the company was working on a $30 billion raise at a $1.4 trillion valuation. It seems the specific numbers have shifted slightly as negotiations continue. The company is clearly focused on securing more capital before it moves forward with plans to go public.

The scale of this potential funding round is a signal of the intense competition in the AI sector. Companies are spending heavily on computing power and talent to develop new models. Securing this much capital privately allows a company to grow its infrastructure before facing the scrutiny of public markets.

The high valuation for OpenAI could also have an impact on its main competitor, Anthropic. Many observers expect Anthropic to go public soon, with rumors suggesting its public S-1 filing could be released any day now. Anthropic raised $65 billion in May at a $965 billion valuation in what many saw as its last big round before an IPO.

Reports indicate Anthropic is seeking a valuation of $1.5 to $2 trillion for its public debut. It also filed confidential paperwork in June. The race is on for both companies to secure the funding they need to scale up their operations and prepare for life as public companies.

As of today, the terms for OpenAI’s round are still being worked out. The company is navigating a path toward a public listing while continuing to raise massive amounts of private capital. The situation with Anthropic is being watched closely as the two companies vie for dominance in the AI market.
